Love in this life entails loss, and loss entails grief. The deeper our love for people, places, dreams, and communities, the more we feel their absence when they are taken away, changed, or broken. While grief is often associated with death, it also accompanies family breakdown, financial hardship, mental health struggles, disaster, and the many disappointments that mark our journey through life.
The Bible speaks honestly about this reality. In Psalm 23, the psalmist describes walking through “the valley of the shadow of death”. It is a powerful image because valleys hem us in, they are not always chosen. They are seasons of uncertainty, sorrow and vulnerability. Yet the promise of the psalm is not that we will avoid the valley, but that we will not walk through it alone: “for you are with me.”
This truth shapes Anglicare’s mission. We know that not every problem can be quickly solved, and not every loss can be restored. Often, the most important thing we can offer is our presence. To listen, to care, to encourage, and to walk alongside people as they navigate life’s difficult seasons.
We see this every day. We support children and families affected by family breakdown or needing safety. We help people facing financial hardship find stability and hope. We provide care and connection for those experiencing mental health challenges. We stand with communities preparing for and then rebuilding after natural disasters.
At its heart, this is about more than practical assistance. It is about recognising the dignity of every person and ensuring that as far as we are able that no one faces life’s valleys alone.
Grief (our own or that of another) reminds us of both the limits and the beauty of our shared humanity. Through the generosity of supporters, volunteers and staff, Anglicare continues to walk beside people in the messy places of life, offering compassion, hope and faithful presence when it is needed most.
Grace and peace.
