Honouring Norma: A Life Lived Outwards

For nearly four decades, Norma expressed her faith by caring for others. When she passed away, those who loved her wanted to honour her by giving a gift to Anglicare in her memory.

Norma trained at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, graduating in 1956. She began her career with Chesalon as a parish nurse, visiting patients at home and offering presence and peace during their most vulnerable moments.

Nursing was not simply a job for her; it was a vocational outworking of her faith. She later trained as a midwife and worked in general nursing before returning to aged care, where many were blessed by her warmth and care.

She served as Matron (Director of Nursing) at Summer Hill Chesalon and later at Beecroft and North Manly, where she remained until her retirement in 1995.

Norma’s life was marked by walking alongside others, helping them find peace during illness and uncertainty. She cared not only for physical needs, but also for spiritual ones — leading devotions, praying with patients, and offering hope.

In 2022, as her health declined, Norma became a resident at Anglicare’s Donald Coburn Centre in Castle Hill. For someone whose life had been

shaped by caring for others, it was a profound shift to be on the receiving side of care. Yet even then, Norma continued to encourage those around her,sharing her wisdom and guiding younger nurses until her passing in 2023.

As Bronwyn, who made the gift in Norma’s memory, shared: “Knowing how important Anglicare was to Norma, I felt it was right to honour her. Her quiet faith, lived out in service, has been a great encouragement to me.”

Norma’s legacy did not end when she passed. Through gifts like these, her compassion continues — supporting families in and through crisis, addressing entrenched disadvantage, caring for the wellbeing of older Australians, and providing a faithful presence through chaplaincy when it’s needed most.
