Kindness Matters

Kindness is often most noticeable by its absence, especially in uncertain times. We feel it in sharp words spoken too quickly, in indifference when help is needed, in systems that move on without seeing the person left behind. When kindness disappears, something in us diminishes. The world becomes harder, more mechanical, less human.

And yet, when kindness is shown, it is startlingly beautiful. Putting ourselves in the other’s shoes, we move towards each other with a patient word. A gentle instruction. A refusal to humiliate. An act of care that costs time, pride, or convenience.

Kindness breaks through the noise. It reminds us that we are seen, valued, and accepted. It restores dignity, not only to the one who receives it but also to the one who offers it.

Scripture tells us that “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22–23). The Hebrew word often translated as “steadfast love” is hesed — rich, covenantal kindness marked by faithfulness and mercy. God’s kindness is not sentimental or weak; it is enduring, committed, and transformative. It stays through change. It lifts the lowly just at the right time. It renews when hope has come to an end.

Every act of true kindness reflects something of this perfect character. When we show kindness, we echo God’s own steadfast love and faithfulness in the world. We participate, even in small ways, in God’s work of restoration. Paul urges us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12), because these virtues shape us into the people God intends us to be.

Kindness makes us more human because it aligns us with our Creator. It resists cruelty, slows haste, and chooses love over power. In a world weary from severity, kindness is so much more than an optional extra — it is a quiet, holy act of hope.
