No Interest Loans: Small but Mighty Help

28th September 2026

Would anything be more daunting than stepping into a cold, empty house in winter with no electricity, no money, no job prospects and two small children, knowing you are solely responsible for keeping everyone alive?

This is the reality Sarah faced when she fled an interstate domestic violence situation this winter and was forced to settle in Sydney, where she knew no one. No family. No friends. No support. In times like these, people like Cherrine are a lifeline.

Cherrine has been working as a microfinance worker for 16 years. In her role at Anglicare, she supports individuals in crisis by connecting them with much-needed assistance and financial programs so they can get the things they need — programs like the No Interest Loans (NILs).

The NILs is a national program, governed by Good Shepherd Australia New Zealand, that is designed to help those on low incomes purchase essential goods and services when they need them most. Unlike predatory loans with high interest and unrealistic repayment times, NILs has no interest, fees, or charges and offers individuals access to safe, affordable loans.

Through Anglicare’s microfinance team, NILs, and an application created by Cherrine, Sarah was able to access essential funds within 24 hours. The loan helped Sarah buy a fridge, a washing machine, two single beds, a vacuum cleaner and a table with four chairs.

However, Cherrine did not stop there.

Cherrine helped Sarah create financial security, as she does for each of her clients, by developing a budget, connecting her with other community resources, supporting her wellbeing, and helping her rebuild her life beyond financial crisis.

“I love giving and being able to support; I get a lot of joy from watching people go on their journeys ... They’re the people we do it for. All in the name of love.”

Anglicare can employ amazing workers like Cherrine because of generous donations. These contributions support outreach and one-on-one support services like microfinance workers, who help ensure that each client receives not only funds but guidance and care on their journey to financial stability.

If you would like to support Anglicare in helping people build financial wellbeing, here is where you can make a donation:
