A Song for Janet, sung by St Andrews Cathedral School

Janet loves music. Long before Anglicare helped her find safe and permanent housing, she was volunteering at music festivals — showing up and serving others. So when 20 students from St Andrews Cathedral School took the stage at Anglicare’s gala dinner to perform Janet’s Song, an original piece written in her honour, it was a remarkable moment.

St Andrews Cathedral School has walked alongside Anglicare for 12 years — through volunteering at our Op Shop warehouses, clothing collections, and fundraising efforts hosted by the school, students have been able to learn what service looks like, while supporting Anglicare’s work with our neighbours in need.

This year, that partnership took a creative turn when Anglicare invited the school’s music department to collaborate on the gala dinner.

Janet’s Song was written by Jon Reichardt and Will Small specifically for Anglicare’s winter appeal, as a tribute to her journey from facing homelessness to finding safety. They envisaged how powerful it would be to have a choir of young voices performing the song with Janet in the room — a vision that was only made possible through the dedicated Music team at St Andrews.

Andrea Kuburic, Assistant Head of Music, says the project has demonstrated something she’s often communicating to her students:
“It’s not just entertainment, music itself can be an act of service.”

Veronika Peters, Head of Philanthropy & Fundraising at Anglicare reflects: “The moment at the gala was special because it was the fruit of a much longer partnership with the school. We can’t wait to see the impact these young leaders will have in the future.”

Janet’s song can now be heard on all major music platforms, where it will continue to raise awareness and funds for women over 55 who are one of the fastest growing groups at risk of homelessness.
